A PRESTON musician didn't exactly blow his own trumpet when he won a major jazz competition - he was playing the trombone.
Alistair White won the regional Young Jazz Musician of the Year title and now will play in the grand finals - where he could win the chance to play in London and New York, as well as cash to the tune of £1,000.
The talented 16-year-old has travelled far and wide with his trombone - to Mexico, Arizona, Israel and France. He has already played with jazz greats James Morrison, Bill Watrous and Georgie Fame.
Alistair, of Eastbourne Close in Ingol, Preston started playing when he was eight years old and now he's learning with the piano. He said: "I was nervous in the contest and didn't think I'd win, but I'm more confident now and looking forward to the final."
Alistair is currently excelling in his GCSEs at Broughton High School and hopes to study music at Newman College, Preston.
Music teacher Barbara Hoyle said: "He has a natural talent, especially for jazz which suits his creative skills. He becomes so absorbed in his music."
Alistair will put his regional prize of £500 towards buying a car. The final takes place in September in London.
