ROY Hodgson could take over the reins at Ewood Park sooner than expected, writes PETER WHITE.
The news follows last night's defeat for Fiorentina in the European Cup Winners' Cup semi-finals.
And the possibility of an "early-starter" being on the menu for Blackburn Rovers' new boss was welcomed by the club today. Chairman Robert Coar said: "It would suit us down to the ground."
The opportunity of Hodgson taking charge in early June has come about because a midweek date in May is now free, following Fiorentina's Euro exit last night at the hands of Bobby Robson's Barcelona.
Italy's final Serie A fixtures were scheduled to be played on Sunday, June 15, after the summer international tournament in France which also involves England.
But, with no Italian representatives in the Cup Winners' Cup final, to be played on Wednesday, May 14, a midweek date is now available.
It is a distinct possibility that those games in the middle of June would be brought forward a month and staged in May.
Failure for one of Italy's three remaining representatives in Europe was the only opening he could see for an early release.
Juventus have reached the European Cup final, to be played on May 28, and Hodgson has guided Inter Milan to the UEFA Cup final which occupies the other two midweek dates in May.
Inter are due to meet Bologna on June 15 but, hopefully, that will be brought forward along with the rest of the Serie A fixtures. Our sources said: "No decision has yet been taken but it seems as though it could well happen."
Inter have already named Gigi Simoni - sacked by Napoli since the announcement - as Hodgson's successor at the San Siro so he would be able to take over as soon as Ewood's new boss leaves for England.
"As soon as Roy finishes his obligations to Inter, I am sure he will be able to join us as they have their new coach ready to step into the gap," said Mr Coar.
"We don't know anything yet but we would obviously welcome any change that allows him to join us earlier than was originally envisaged.
"Naturally he has to fulfil his commitments to his present club but the more time he has to prepare for next season at Ewood the better for everyone concerned."
The B team play their final home game of the season tomorrow, when they entertain Tranmere at Brockhall. Rovers reserves visit Everton tomorrow (2pm).
