AN elderly woman was taken to hospital suffering from the effects of smoke inhalation after a fire at her home.
The fire brigade said Dorothy Roberts was trying to put out a blazing log from an open fire at her home in Barley, when it sparked a fire in the kitchen.
Mrs Roberts, who is in her 70s, managed to get out of the house.
An ambulance took her to Burnley General Hospital.
Sub officer Andy Taylor, of Nelson fire station, said: "There was too much wood on the open fire and she decided to take one of the logs to the kitchen sink to put water on it. It must have caught on something in the kitchen and started the fire."
Mrs Roberts was poorly but slightly improved after staying overnight in hospital.
