WALKERS will be putting their best feet forward to raise money for a Rossendale-based search and rescue team.

Two treks are planned, one on May 18, when walkers will be sponsored to complete 25km.

The second, the annual Rossendale Way In A Day walk, will be on July 12.

The first walk leaves Rossendale Search and Rescue Team's headquarters in Clegg Street, Haslingden, between 9am and 10am.

Walkers can raise money for their own charity as well as the rescue team. Last year more than 350 people took part and team member Andy Simpson said they were queued up seven deep near the centre.

Andy said: "We raised £3,000 from last year's effort, but we need to raise at least £12,000 each year just to keep the team running.

"Any amount over that is a bonus and allows us to buy new or replace older equipment."

Rossendale Way In A Day is a marathon 46-mile slog taking in views of the valley from every aspect.

It leaves The Glory, Loveclough, at 5am.

A shorter 24-mile route is also available.

The entrance fee of £10 covers safety and food and drink for all participants.

Last year 74 people undertook the full walk with about half-a-dozen unable to finish and a further 40 to 50 walkers completing the shorter walk.

It is only the second time the search and rescue team has organised Rossendale Way In A Day and it hopes for a large turn-out.
