FRAIL old lady is not a term you would use when describing June Gregson.

June, 63, from Ansdell Road, Blackpool, is as fit as a fiddle and ready to join her soccer-mad team-mates for the 80th anniversary re-union of the famous Dick Kerr's ladies football team.

The Fylde team was formed in 1917 and quickly went on to become the most successful ladies football team in Britain, losing just 24 matches out of a staggering total of 800. They were finally disbanded in 1965 when the FA decided to ban women's football.

June joined the team back in the 1950s when she was just 15 and played until she was 21 - when the lure of a career in London tore her away from muddy boots and glory.

June has shied away from marriage proposals over the years and said: "I couldn't see myself washing someone else's socks for the rest of my life!"

She finally moved back to the Fylde eight years ago where she is very happy to be single and has a wonderful social life. June said of the forthcoming game: "I'm really looking forward to having a kick-about with the girls again, I just hope I can still take the pace.

"The reunion matches are always special for all of the ladies - although this year will be quite sad as we have recently lost one of our team-mates Brenda Eastwood.

"It is fitting, therefore, that the award this year will be in her name."

The two-day five-a-side tournament will take place at the Fleetwood Nautical College on August 1 and 2 and will attract teams from throughout England, Ireland, Scotland and Belgium.

A very special show featuring Sheila Ferguson of the Three Degrees will take place after the match and the commentary will be provided by Red Rose Radio and Preston Citizen sports journalist Tom Parker.
