LONG-AGO word has it that the stage at Leigh St Joseph's is haunted. This week IT IS! The ghost story "A Murder Has Been Arranged" sets the skin a'crawling as Sir Charles Jasper hosts a party to celebrate his 50th birthday and forthcoming inheritance, writes DAVID HODGKINSON.

Linda Sargent, in her debut as director with St Joseph's Players, keeps the mood creepy in a riveting play from the pen of Emlyn Williams.

She has gathered a fine cast, who never let the pace drop in a play that will have you on the edge of your seat.

There is Jennifer Hampson as a brisk and efficient secretary, Dave Farrell as the leader of the band, Yvonne Parkinson as a kindly cook, David Grime as a knight errant, Kathryn Chadwick as the unhappy wife, Joan Doorey as a forceful mother, David Parkinson as the mild-mannered Sir Jasper, John Cash as a charismatic rogue and Marie Hoffman as a mysterious woman.

The play, which ends a four-night run tomorrow, forms the first half of the company's Spring Drama Double. The 20s comedy "Daisy Pulls It Off" will be staged from May 20-23.

Tickets (£3) from Boardman's Outfitters, Bradshawgate, Leigh. Playgoers may also pay at the door.
