FORMER Bury FC player Eddie Quigley, who was twice transferred for record fees, has died at Blackpool Victoria Hospital, aged 75.
He was born in Radcliffe but later moved to Fleetwood. He leaves a widow Elsie, a son and daughter and four grandchildren.
Mr Quigley began his playing career with Bury as an amateur when he was 14 but was in the Royal Navy until the end of the war. The talented inside right with a flair for goalscoring returned to Gigg Lane but in 1947 signed for Sheffield Wednesday for a then record £12,500. He played 78 first team games and scored 52 goals for the Owls.
In 1949, he signed for Preston North End for a British record fee of £27,000 and played for England B against Holland in Amsterdam in 1950. In 1952 he joined Blackburn Rovers for £20,000 and four years later returned to finish his playing career at Bury. In the early 1960s Mr Quigley was manager of Stockport County then took over the helm at Blackburn until 1971.
He later joined Blackpool with Bob Stokoe before returning to Shakers as chief scout again linking up with the then Bury boss, Stokoe.
