ALAN WHALLEY'S WORLD
CAN anyone remember Fol-Dol Row - an ancient terrace of low-level cottages at Parr?
The query is posed by Susan Helsby of Hamblett Crescent, Haresfinch, who with partner Ged Marsden, is about to breathe new life into the recently-shuttered Hen & Chickens pub.
The pair plan to re-open that well-known watering hole at the end of May and are considering requesting a change of pub name to take it into a new era. One that has sprung to mind is The Fol-Dol.
Quite a number of Parr folk have mentioned Fol-Dol Row, a string of humble step-down homes which used to extend along Chancery Lane, between the pub and the old library.
"But," says Susan, "no-one has yet been able to explain how it came by its intriguing placename or provided any interesting facts or tales about the old row."
SO, if any reader can help (or suggest an appropriate alternative pub name) please drop me a line at the Star and I'll pass your suggestions on.
