REGARDING the article (LET, April 25) 'Enemies Become Friends,' by Pamela Howe-Taylor about the World War Two prisoner of war camp at Stanhill. As a boy of 14, I visited the camp a few times - mostly to learn Italian swear words, because, to the best of my knowledge, the only prisoners there were Italians.
They were guarded by the predecessors of Group Four, for it was common knowledge that the prisoners were frequently seen in the village. They had no wish to escape.
Also, I used to visit the barrage balloon site in the field next to Church and Oswaldtwistle Cricket Club.
It was manned entirely by females with one man in charge.
There was no television in those days, so you took your entertainment in whatever form you could.
