I WISH to protest at the withdrawal of funding for the two part-time breast care nurses. The amount of money saved (which besides their salaries includes administration costs) is a pittance in terms of that allocated to the Hospital Trust.

Publicity has ensured awareness of the trauma suffered by the discovery of breast cancer. The initial operation, whether it be mastectomy or lumpectomy, followed by X-ray therapy and/or chemotherapy, is indeed a difficult experience for women to come to terms with.

What is less well-known is the fact that breast cancer is insidious and able to return, often many years later. It is then found in the bone, brain or soft tissue. The woman is generally told that her condition is terminal. Thus, the breast care nurses have great numbers of women in need of their help at different stages of the disease.

Margaret Robinson and the breast care nurses do most excellent work in helping women with their illness, both in practical terms and emotionally. I personally have been grateful for their care.
