ORGANISERS of a Newton-based playgroup fear it could be forced to close unless more parents sign up their youngsters to boost funds.
The Wargrave Playgroup, which has been up and running for eight years, holds three morning sessions a week at its base in the Newton Family and Community Centre, Park Road South. But a lack of interest from local residents has resulted in funds dwindling. And co-ordinator Marie Bradbury fears the club will have no option but to close if they can't raise any more money.
"We keep organising fund-raising events such as raffles and sales but the response from the local community is disappointing to say the least. It would be a real shame if we had to close because not only do we offer somewhere for the children to learn and play, but it gives the parents a break for a couple of hours a day as well."
The group meet on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9.15 to 11.15am. Each session costs £1.50 and you can contact Marie or group treasurer Angela Dale on 01925 224731. Marie has also organised a jumble sale in a bid to raise money which will be held at the community centre on Wednesday, May 7.
