VOLUNTEERS at a Burnley community centre have turned it into one of the most secure in the north west.
The work came about after a violent robbery at the Vincent Farrell Temple Street centre and has taken six months to complete.
It includes some of the latest door locks and alarms and a changing procedures to mean that only tiny amounts of cash are on the premises.
The costs have been met from donations from Hurel Dubois and the area's Safer Cities fund.
The Mayor of Burnley, Councillor Arthur Park, is chairman of the centre's management committee.
He said: "On the one hand, it's sad to see such measures are needed in a local community building which is open to all.
"On the other hand, it's been rally encouraging to see generous help being offered from the private sector and grant-aid providers.
"People have been working in partnership to achieve the really important thing, and that is a safe and secure environment for local people to relax and meet together."
