AMAZING Emily Yates is 100 today... but she doesn't think it's worth making a fuss about.
Emily, a non-smoking non-drinker, has lived on her own in a Blackburn Council flat for more than 20 years.
She still cooks her own meals and is too proud to have a home help or have meals on wheels delivered.
A series of celebrations got under way at her home in Westwood Road, Blackburn, with a visit from the Mayor of Blackburn, Coun Mary Leaver.
A family party is also planned for Friday night at the Orchard Club, Blackburn.
Emily worked in the clothing industry from the age of 12. Husband Fred was a labourer in the meat industry.
She has two children, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Son Norman Yates said: "My mum couldn't see why the family are making so much fuss.
"As far as she is concerned it is just another birthday.
"She did get quite excited when all the cards started arriving but the visit from the mayor was a complete surprise."
Mr Yates added: "My mother is amazing.
"She can't get out and about as much as she would like to but she still looks after herself.
"She has never smoked or drunk alcohol throughout her life and maybe that has got something to do with how healthy she still is."
Mary Leaver's visit to Mrs Yates will be her last engagement as Blackburn's mayor. She will replaced as mayor by Peter Greenwood at the annual meeting of Blackburn with Darwen Council.
