A DISABLED athlete is racing to collect cash to fulfil her dream of competing in South Africa.

Wheelchair-bound Lynne Riding, from Starrgate Drive, Ashton, near Preston, says unless she can raise £500 she may not be able to take part in the Disabled Ex-Services World Games in Pretoria.

A former Sea Cadet, she is a member of a 45-strong squad from the British Ex-Services Wheelchair Sports Association who need £70,000 to buy team kit and pay for air fares and accommodation.

Lynne, who competed in last year's Paralympics in Atlanta, said: "I'm really looking forward to it. It will be a great experience. But I'm really struggling to raise the money. If I don't get it I won't be able to go. If any local people or businesses can help out in any way I'd be very grateful."

Lynne needs a wheelchair after receiving terrible spinal injuries when she fell at home just over ten years ago.

And as a double gold medal winner at last year's event in Gateshead she is hoping to repeat the feat in table tennis and discus events. Secretary General of The Royal British Legion Ian Townsend said: "This is an important event in the international sporting calendar but it is also one where taking part really does mean as much to the competitor as winning medals.

"The athletes are working hard both to get fit and raise money. The Legion is behind them and we hope the public will give generously."
