BLACKBURN Cathedral Lantern Tower is set for a face-lift - thanks to people power.
More than £500,000 has been raised by the local community to refurbish the tower. Now organisers say the Lantern Appeal needs an estimated £750,000.
The aim of the appeal is to replace the tower's 56 glass panels with new ones. Designed by local artist Linda Walton, the windows will be based on the theme of fire and water.
Fund-raisers also hope to replace the concrete framework, which holds the stained glass windows, with a new natural stone to blend in with the rest of the building.
Businesses, organisations and individuals have been invited to donate money towards the cost of the panels.
Various schemes have been set up to fund the appeal, and it is hoped all monies raised will be available for the Autumn, when work is planned to start.
Appeals director Penelope Worsley said: " This is the only Anglican cathedral in Lancashire, and we provide a service to the whole community throughout the county. Support from local people is vital to the running of this cathedral."
Churches, schools, Scouts, Guides and the armed forces have also pledged their support to the appeal.
A special Cathedral Brew - created by Daniel Thwaites - has also been successfully marketed in local pubs of which part of the money raised from each pint sold has been donated to the fund.
