LANCE TODD Trophy winner Tommy Martyn took time off from his Wembley preparations to pay tribute to Leigh's young guns.
The town's Rugby League schoolboys beat Leeds 25-16 at The Willows to win the National Knockout Trophy.
Five of the squad were from Westleigh High - Gary Gittins, Gary Molyneux, Robert Bowdler, Carl Bailey and Lee Hart.
And, in a special school assembly, Tommy popped in to award the youngsters commemorative certificates.
Delighted deputy headmistress Hilda Hodson, who taught Tommy at Leigh CE, said: "He gave many words of encouragement to our pupils and was an inspiration.
"We are thrilled by his success at Wembley. We are proud of our Leigh lad."
