Woking 1 Morecambe 2
The Shrimps saved one of their best performances to last and ensured that they finished in fourth place at the end of the season - their highest place ever to date. Manager Jim Harvey said: "We have finished fourth, a lot higher than our previous seasons but I still feel that we are capable of a lot more. "We have so much new talent in our squad and I believe that we should be in the top two next season. In the last few games, our performance has been outstanding - I hope that we can match that performance over the next season and iron out the few mistakes which we are still making. But I gave myself five years and considering the resources we have we have achieved a lot and we're just about in the right place now to be up there with the best."
The first half was exciting and only short of one vital element, goals. Ian Monk and Mike Bignall were both guilty of missing golden opportunities to take the lead and at the other end, Woking's Terry Howard volleyed Clive Walker's cross only for the inside of the post to deny him.
Morecambe showed in the second half exactly why they finished fourth when two goals early in the second half secured their three points. Steve Hodgson opened the scoring when he hit in a powerful header 12 yards out from Andy Grimshaw's cross.
Five minutes later, Morecambe doubled their lead when a neat passing move led to Grimshaw fiercely driving the ball into the bottom corner of the net from 20 yards.
Woking sub Hunter scored a consolation goal on the 90th minute when he headed home from Scott Steele's cross but it was just too late. The two goal deficit that Morecambe had set up proved just too much for Woking to pull back.
