BLACKPOOL's two new Labour MPs hope to make real advances for local jobs, housing and schools before the next general election.
Gordon Marsden, who swept Blackpool South from the Tories with a majority of 11,600, and Joan Humble, who won Blackpool North and Fleetwood by nearly 9,000, told the Citizen their aims as they took up office.
"I would like to see us begin to make a dent in the appalling housing situation in parts of Blackpool," said Mr Marsden.
"Government initiatives in releasing council house receipts and a new building programme should enable us to make real progress.
"I'd also like to see a re-examination of the future role of tourism in the resort, looking at a new strategy to attract a broader range of visitors who would not only enjoy its facilities but use it as a hub, strengthening the holiday industry."
"And on a personal note, a I'd like to see a greater sense of pride in the town's visual appearance."
Joan Humble put jobs at the top of her list: "My first aim must be to work for the future economic prosperity of our area," she said.
"I want to protect jobs in the Fleetwood fishing industry, in the civil service, at ICI and in the many small businesses throughout Blackpool North and Fleetwood.
"Education must be a priority and I would hope that the pledge on reducing infant class sizes is put into effect as soon as practicable."
