TORY Party chairman Norman Tebbitt was locked in a war of words with Labour as the election battle hotted up. Labour leader Neil Kinnock asked Mr Tebbitt to give £500 to charity in a bet over a quote attributed to the chairman in a Labour Party advertisement.
Mr Tebbitt refused, saying Labour had failed to prove he said in a 1983 radio programme: "If unemployment is not below three million in five years, then I'm not worth electing."
