THE Annual Roses Festival of Sport between Lancaster University and York University has taken place with a defeat for the Bailrigg students.
The 33 year old encounter between the two universities involves over 1,000 students each year. This year's event was hosted by York and 550 students from Lancaster were shipped into Yorkshire to compete with their arch rivals.
This year's competition was incredibly close for the whole weekend with only a few points between the two institutions. During the weekend there were about 50 different sporting events, ranging from well-known sports such as football and cricket, to less known such as octopus and frisbee. The standard of competition was very high and the good weather attracted a large number of supporters. Other events during the weekend included a beer tent all day on Saturday and the Roses Ball on Saturday evening.
The final result on the Friday afternoon left York victorious by a small margin of 14 points: Lancaster 116, York 130. The Mayors of Lancaster and York attended the presentation ceremony on Sunday afternoon to present the trophies, and the Vice Chancellors of the two universities were also present. York University were presented with the precious Carter James Trophy as the overall winners of the event.
Lancaster University look forward to challenging York again next year, on our home turf, and reclaiming the trophy.
