ST HELENS CC came within an ace of clinching victory against Huyton on Saturday.

They had first use of the wicket, but lost two early wickets.

However, a middle order recovery from Darren Tyms (41), Roger Burrows (25) and Adam Friar (20) helped the men from Windleshaw Road to declare at 157-9.

Huyton also lost early wickets on a pitch giving help to the bowlers.

And only Aussie Eric Goddard (35) and Ian Robson had any success with the bat.

The St Helens bowlers did almost enough to win the game with Phil Roughley performing with his usual accuracy to take 2-9 off eight overs.

He was ably supported by Adam Friar (3-43), Steve Jordan (2-16) and Mark Wells (1-15).

But Huyton held on at 96-8.

This Saturday's home game with Wigan will be preceded by a buffet for former players at 1pm.
