THEATRE goers in Darwen will soon be able to enjoy local productions in glitzy surroundings following a National Lottery handout of over half a million pounds.

The Darwen Library Theatre, home to both the Darwen Youth Theatre and the Library Players, has received £628, 400 to refurbish the stage area to make it accessible to disabled performers and to extend the foyer to include a licensed bar and cafe.

Stella Barclay, leader of Darwen Youth Players, said: "We're delighted with the money. It's about time theatres out of London are seen to get donations.

"In the past, we've had to turn down touring companies with physically disabled performers as they just couldn't get to the stage. Now all that is going to change."

The refurbishment will create a larger foyer which will be open during the day as a cafe serving light meals. It will also refit the auditorium increasing its seating capacity to 250.

The renovations mean that the Darwen Youth Theatre actors will be homeless during rehearsals for their next production. They are currently finding school and church halls in which to practice.

Stella said: "There is a keen interest in the Theatre around here, it is the only one in Darwen. But before the money was granted it had a bit of a tatty schoolhall atmosphere. Now it will feel like a real night out.

"People shouldn't have to travel miles to see good performances in nice surroundings. Now they won't."
