PRESTON were easily beaten by 8 wickets at Leyland Daf in the first round of the Vaux Samson cup.
Daf captain and professional, David Makinson won the toss and put Preston into bat.
Jonathan Fleetwood and Graham Dobson opened the batting but the former was out with the score on 7.
He was caught in the gulley by Alan Richardson off Central Lancashire University student, Nic Summerscales for six.
Worse was to follow when Antony Mann was caught behind by Charlie Williamns off Stuart Catterall without scoring.
Preston professional Manoj Parekh followed quickly caught by Phil Iddon at slip off Nic Summerscales without troubling the scorers.
The visitors were reeling at 10 for 3.
Opening batsman Graham Dobson and his captain Graham Standering added eleven runs before both their wickets fell at the same score of 21.
Dobson was caught by Richardson off Catterall for seven and Standering was caught and bowled by Summerscales for three.
Five runs later Mike Hancock was trapped lbw playing back to Sephton Prince for nought.
Iqbal Lilley then tried to redress the balance, and he made fourteen before being bowled by David Makinson.
John Richardson was next out caught by Iddon off Simon Hogan for 5, leaving Preston 58 for 8.
Paul Richardson was then splendidly caught by Catterall at deep mid-wicket for 12, giving Hogan his second wicket.
Roger Kaye was last our for 8, leaving Zahoor Ahmed not out 2 and Preston were dismissed for a paltry 73.
Daf's best bowler were Simon Hogan with 3 for 11 from his allotted six overs, while Nic Summerscales bowled impressively to take 3 for 19.
Leyland Daf started impressively in their reply, Phil Iddon and Stuart Catterall laid the foundation for victory, with an opening partnership of 45 in 64 minutes.
Iddon was out first caught by Parekh off Lilley for 16 and Stuart Catterall followed nine runs later.
He was caught by Ahmed off Kaye for 29.
His innings included four fours.
Alan Murray and Alan Richardson, with 20 and 8 not out respectively, saw Leyland Daf home to victory in the 22nd over.
Murray finished the game with a towering six off Lilley.
Unfortunately, Leyland could not make it a double as Netherfield beat them by 72 runs at Fox Lane.
Leyland captain and professional Paul Tebay put the visitors into bat and they plundered the Leyland attack.
Netherfield's South African professional Derek Crookes top scored with 69.
He was ably assisted by Simon Dalzell with 44, and teenager Gareth White who made 43.
Netherfield posted a score of 205-6 from their allotted 30 eight-ball overs.
Paul Tebay was the pick of the Leyland bowlers with 2 for 20 from his allotted six overs.
Leyland always struggled in reply finishing at 133 for 8, only opening batsman Paul Tebay mastered the Netherfield bowling attack.
He finished with an unbeaten 70 and his innings included 2 sixes and 7 fours.
The only other batsman to get into double figures was Neil Kenyon with 24.
Netherfield leg-spinner Mark Hadwin was the pick of the visitors bowling attack, finishing with 3 for 20.
