MRS Thatcher hit the election trail in East Lancashire with at least six personal guards - and one of the biggest security back-up operations in British electoral history.
Lancashire police, Special Branch officers and anti-terrorist squad members threw a ring of steel around Nelson, where the Prime Minister was visiting a factory.
IRA warlords had warned after eight terrorists were shot dead that Mrs Thatcher topped their hit list.
