ORGANISERS of Pendle's first "green" festival have thrown out an invitation to all local groups and businesses with an interest in protecting the environment.

The Say Yes to Alternatives event will be held at Pendle Leisure Centre, Colne, on June 27/28.

It is the area's contribution to a worldwide environmental action plan for the 21st Century called Agenda 21, launched at the Rio Earth Summit in 1992.

The eco festival will focus on practical measures which people and organisations can undertake to improve Pendle's environment.

It also hopes to bring environmental issues to life using entertainment, workshops, interactive displays and talks.

Among the attractions already booked are a solar-powered fountain, Red Rose Organics which delivers organic fruit and vegetables around the area, a permaculture workshop and cycles for disabled people. Organiser Bryan Thompson said: "As well as being a fun event for all the family, the festival aims to help local people to take more care of their environment.

People will also be able to learn more about issues such as sustainable energy and transport."

Anyone interested in taking part in the Alternatives event should contact Mr Thompson at Colne Town Hall (tel 01282 661661) or Judy Yacoub at Pendle Heritage Centre (01282 695366).
