SUPPORTERS of Christie Hospital proved it is possible to have a cake and eat it when they found a novel way of handing over £5,000 for research into generic breast cancer.
The cash has been raised by a small band of dedicated volunteers since the turn of the year, and its handover to specialist Dr Gareth Evans marked a turning point in the group's history.
Since it was formed in November 1992 the Burnley and Pendle team has raised £41,000 for the hospital. Their latest donation will be used to fund research into generic breast cancer, and from June all their efforts will be directed to the massive Christie Against Cancer Appeal, which aimed to raise £25 million by 2,001.
