VINCE HANKINSON reckons Atherton RU is going places. And HE is definitely going places - a sponsored cycle ride from Land's End to John O'Groats with club member Helen Smith.
The prize pair are now on the last leg of their strength-sapping adventure, which is due to end on Sunday.
It's all part of their aim to raise around £25,000 and put the club on the sporting map. Plans are already in hand to build a clubhouse close to their pitch near Hesketh Fletcher High playing fields, hopefully with financial assistance from the National Lottery.
Said Vince: "We already run one well-established side plus three mini and junior teams. Now we would like to run more, including a women's team.
"Our intention is to build more than a one-day-a-week club. We want to be open every day, attracting anyone in our community who wishes to play.
"We have also formed a pact with Atherton Valley Junior FC who will also have use of our facilities.
"Much has been said about the lack of facilities in our town. We now have a unique opportunity to do something about it."
The group have already written to some 200 shops and businesses in the town asking for support.
CULCHETH RU are on the lookout for a player/coach.
The club, which plays in Courage League North Division Two, will have two teams at Shaw Street next season, aiming to improve on their mid-table ranking and gunning for promotion.
Twice-a-week training begins again in June.
