AFTER months of speculation, the curtain has risen on a new era at the Theatre Royal, as the new management launch an innovative three-year programme. The theatre world is watching as the church steps into the spotlight and takes control of this historic theatre.

The Theatre Royal will continue to serve the community as a professional theatre following agreement between the Theatre Trustees and new leaseholders, the Independent Methodist Connexion.

It will specialise in affordable, high-quality family entertainment. New manager, Harold Hoggarth believes the community will be excited by the programme. "I have seen the benefits of the theatre for the community, and I'm thrilled to be involved in this innovative programme which I'm sure the people of St Helens and the North West will welcome.

"Already changes have been made, and the new computerised box office and 'family-friendly' approach are designed to encourage all of the community to sample live theatre.

"We have a long history of involvement in the community of St Helens, and through the theatre we have a further opportunity to meet and support the people of St Helens and the North West. In addition to the theatre stage programme, we will be opening a young people's theatre centre; a children's club, and we'll have the 'Theatre Crew' - volunteers who want to get hands-on experience in all aspects of the theatre. A new series of 'celebrations' will feature contemporary Christian music and worship, and focus national attention on the theatre."

Sir Cliff Richards is one of the many stars who have sent messages of support. He said: "It has been said that the Church and the Arts are incompatible - not so - here's the perfect opportunity to communicate what is good and life-changing. I wish the Connexion a successful launch, and the people of St Helens many years of happy and fruitful theatre-going."
