THE cricket season has taken a dramatic turn for the better for Owens Corning St Helens Recs.

On Friday they defeated Bolton League outfit Clifton in the National Knockout.

And on Saturday, they beat Worsley in the Liverpool Competition at Ruskin Drive.

Friday saw them take first use of the crease. They amassed 250-8 in 45 overs. Vinny Wood (46) and Ian Huyton (58) gave Recs a great start.

Alan Hitchmough then smashed 74 off 65 balls to leave Clifton requiring 5.5 an over.

Gary Freeman ripped out the first three wickets with only 20 runs on the board.

And despite a middle order flurry, Recs wrapped up the game in the 42nd over for a 90-run victory.

On Saturday Recs asked league newcomers Worsley to bat. But Worsley looked in commanding form, reaching 57 without loss.

However, Phil Baines made the breakthrough, having both opener, including South African professional Brad Flegg stumped by Gary Morrison.

Baines (3-48) and Freeman (2-42) bowled in tandem for 35 overs to reduce Worsley to 98-6. They were assisted by some fine fielding, including a MIke Tarran run-out with a direct hit.

Steve Garvey then produced a devastating spell to take the last four wickets for only nine runs.

After tea Recs struggled, but knocks from Vinny Wood (38) and Alan Hitchmough (56 not out) gave Recs an eight-wicket victory.

In the second team's victory skipper Neil Aconley claimed six wickets.

Meanwhile, the under 18s beat Billinge by 44 runs as Gareth Bradley hit 61 not out. And the under 15s enjoyed victories over Leigh and Haydock, leg spinners Danny Wakefield (4-14) and Bradley (6-18) playing major roles.

This weekend Recs have a busy programme sponsored by Mather Plant Hire.
