A STAR of Saints' victorious Wembley squad is joining the amateur ranks . . .

Aussie ace Derek McVey has been named coach of Thatto Heath.

The appointment marks the latest stage in the ambitious club's plans for the future.

They have applied to join Blackbrook in the National Conference League and have long-term plans for their own ground and clubhouse.

Heath were helped by sponsors Canter, Levin and Berg in bringing big Derek to their temporary home at West Park RUFC.

And chairman Chris Honey said: "It's great to have such a big name with us. Derek has played under some great coaches and we hope this move will be mutually beneficial.

"Derek is also a qualified coach and we feel he will be able to attract more players to the club."

Said a delighted McVey: "I let it be known that I was interested in coaching and the next thing was that Heath official Shaun Crehan contacted me.

"My only previous experience was in Australian junior football and with Hope University, Liverpool, which was arranged by Saints' Academy boss Nick Halifahi.

"I am due to attend a players meeting at Thatto Heath on Tuesday, June 10, and from them on I believe I will be needed two night a week, and possibly some Saturday afternoons, but I do not foresee any problems with my Saints commitments.

"My coaching career is very much in its infancy because I am an unknown quantity, but I am looking forward to joining Thatto Heath because they are great bunch of lads with plenty of potential," added Derek Meanwhile, Heath were this week due to submit an application for a £750,000 national lottery grant to help fund the building of their new HQ on land behind the Tannery Farm Garage, Elephant Lane.

And players are due to report back for training in mid-June.

HEATH officials have launched a search for a 'missing' trophy.

The Dave Shuttleworth Memorial Trophy was apparently presented to the club by the family of the popular former player who died tragically after collapsing while playing for UGB in a match at Widnes six years ago.

Now they are hoping to track down the trophy in time for the club's presentation night at West Park on Friday, May 30.

Anyone who might be able to help can contact Frank Martin at the Star on (01744) 611861.

Meanwhile, entertainment at the presentation evening will be provided by comedian Charlie Ale and admission is £4, payable at the door.
