BURNLEY Health Care Trust is preparing to open a ground-breaking eating-disorder centre.

High Meadow, Colne Road, Brierfield, is the first NHS unit of its kind. As well as being a comfortable home for anorexia and bulimia sufferers, it has consultation rooms for a team of dieticians, nurses, psychologists, psychiatrists and an occupational therapist.

Patients aged 16 to 65 will be accepted from anywhere in the country and will stay for up to three months.

Burnley Health Care clinical director Dr Mike Launer: "Sadly, eating disorders are increasingly common. It is important to treat not just the symptoms but also the associated body-image and self-esteem issues.

"Anorexia and bulimia are often tied to other psychological problems, such as phobias, depression and alcohol abuse.

"High Meadow will provide an excellent environment and caring professional support to address each indiv- idual's problems."

Before the first patients are admitted, open days for GPs will be held next week.
