Kirkby Lonsdale Motor Club members were flying the flag this weekend at Three Sisters Kart Circuit at Ashton in Makerfield. Although it is the second event at this venue which counts in the local championship, six Kirkby crews contested the event run by Wigan and District M.C. Carnforth's Andrew Ludlam/Duncan Shaw in the Opel Ascona had an all day battle with Paul Taylor/June Hushion in a Mk 2 Escort and missed out on second place by four seconds.
Dave Thwaites/Ray Derry were showing Ludlam and Shaw the way around in the morning stages until an overshoot on the 5th stage caused the Vauxhall Nova 16 valve to hit a barrier side ways on, which put them behind and try as they might they finished behind the Carnforth pairing in 4th place and first in class.
The Darrian T90 of Jim MacDiarmid/Miles Whitelock finished just behind the Nova in 5th place, only 8 seconds behind the flying Thwaites.
At the other end of the results, Katy Mashiter/Kevin Savage were 63rd in their first event together. With Katy having never driven on a tarmac event before there was plenty to be learned about cutting corners, braking and selecting the right gear at just the right time on this fast circuit in the Escort Mk 2 which has taken husband Neil to two consecutive top three places in the RSM Championship.
Although problems with the oil cooler meant they collected a maximum on the 5th stage, they both seemed to have enjoyed the day with Katy getting faster with the coaching she was receiving from the former winning co-driver of the Illuminations Road Rally. The next Championship event is the Lion stages on June 8th to be held in the Whiskershield and Kidland Forest complex, with the next tarmac round on July 20th back at Three Sisters.
