BURY have moved swiftly to fill the gap left by the free transfer of leading scorer Mark Carter.

Boss Starn Ternent has splashed out £120,000 on Tony Battersby who was on loan from Notts County at the end of last season.

"Tony did well for us and I had no hesitation in making the move permanent," confirmed boss Stan Ternent. "He is still a young lad and will improve no end."

Battersby could be the first of several summer signings as Ternent strengthens his squad for what is sure to be a tough return to the First Division.

"I have no set budget but if a player becomes available who I think makes us a better squad then I will go to the chairman and ask for the money." declared the manager. "We are a more attractive club now we are in the First Division but some players will expect huge wages that could be out of our reach."

Ternent's success in the transfer market is indisputable with promotion won by a team that cost less than (net) £250,000 - an amazingly low figure in this day and age.

His skills at wheeling and dealing will be put to the test over the next couple of months as he needs at least four more new, experienced faces.

He and assistant Sam Ellis can settle down to the task after agreeing a new pay deal with the board.

"We were made a generous offer and we were glad to accept," confirmed Ternent. "Neither Sam, nor myself, wanted to leave the club.

"By comparison to some managers we will not be earning a fortune but that isn't always the most important thing. A good job doesn't always mean big money.

"It is important that you work with and for good, honest people. Bury scores highly in that regard it is a great family club with fantastic and loyal supporters and both Sam and I look forward to doing our best for them."
