POLICE are hunting a vicious rapist who attacked a 24-year-old woman in broad daylight.

The assault happened at 6.30pm on Sunday (May 18) as the woman was walking along Tanpits Road, near to the former Beldam Asbestos works.

She was grabbed her from behind by the man who subjected her to a terrifying sexual assault, before raping her.

Police believe the attacker may have escaped via the grassy, tree-lined embankment towards the dual carriageway at Peel Way, close to the new Tesco development.

Det Ins Ian Jackson of Bury Police said: "We are appealing to anyone who may have seen this man after the incident, perhaps running across Peel Way, to contact us. Or if anyone remembers seeing a car parked up in the area."

The attacker is described as white, about 30-years-old, approximately 5ft 9ins tall, of slim build and with a pale complexion. He had very short dark grey hair in a crew cut style, which gave the impression of premature ageing.

He was wearing a dark, summer-weight cotton jacket, blue stone wash jeans and white trainers.
