HELMSHORE residents are hoping to put a sparkle into Christmas by lighting a tree in the centre of the village.

Rossendale Council axed town centre Christmas lights throughout the Valley as part of a budget cost-cutting exercise in April. But Helmshore Residents' Association is appealing for money to light up the village.

The association wants to put Christmas lights on a tree at the end of The Parade, Broadway, and has asked Rossendale Council for a contribution to the costs.

Last Christmas the association organised a carol concert on the Friday before Christmas round the tree, attended by 150 people. Organisers planned to put candles in the tree, but the night was too windy.

Residents Association spokesperson Arlene Harris, said: "Instead, everyone congregated round the tree and put their candles round the base. It was really successful, but we would really like proper lights on the tree this year." The residents have written to the council's leisure and tourism committee asking for help with the costs of illuminating the tree.

Last year they asked for a proper Christmas tree with lights, but were told the cost could be up to £1,000. They see the current request as a compromise solution.

Mrs Harris, of Cherry Tree Way, Helmshore, said: "The tree at the corner of Broadway is nothing like a traditional Christmas tree, but it is in a good spot.

"It is close to street lights and it is a focal point for the village."

Last year, Helmshore and Haslingden bands played the music and local people handed out drinks and mince pies.

Mrs Harris said if the council could contribute some of the cost she hoped local firms, schools and churches would also help raise funds.
