LANCASTER'S National Sedan Chair Carrying Championships is to be featured in the new edition of 'The Guinness Book of Records.'

The highlight of the city's Georgian legacy festival will appear in the 'unusual events' feature of the famous annual which sells millions round the world each year.

Guinness were particularly interested in the team which has won the past two championships, 'The Scholars,' which is made up of Nick Wigmore, Sean Smith and Dr Deb McVea from Lancaster University.

The championship was first staged in 1993 and will take place again this year on August Bank Holiday.

Tourism officer, David Wright, said: "I'm delighted by the further recognition of Lancaster's unique sporting event and tourism promotion. To be included in such a prestigious publication, which sells millions of copies world wide. It's a real scoop. The championship has previously been featured on television's 'The BIg Breakfast'
