ST HELENS produced one of the most incredible feats in their 153-year history when they defeated Chester Boughton Hall on Saturday.

Chester batted first and declared on 190-1 with Aussie Foley, surviving a difficult caught and bowled chance when on two, and going on to score 133 not out.

St Helens lost wickets steadily and captain Neil Woods watched the last batsman join him at the crease with the score at 91-9. The equation was simple. 100 runs to get and one wicket to fall.

The odds against a win were fantastic as Chester had declared early to allow 60 overs to take all of the St Helens wickets - or so they thought.

It also allowed Neil Woods (91 not out) and Steve Jordan (seven not out) time to score the runs and win the game.

Steve Jordan's contribution in keeping out Aussie Foley (5-35) and S Wundke (3-60) was just as valuable as Woods's highest score in first team cricket.

Friday night saw St Helens progress into the second round of the Echo Cup at the expense of Birkenhead St Marys and on Sunday win a friendly match against Wigan to make it the most successful weekend of the season so far.
