I HAVE a five-year-old son who, like most kids around this area, used to play on the Wesley Guild most evenings and weekends.

Since the Guild has been sold, the only safe place around this area for him to play is Pennington Park. So can anyone at Wigan Metro tell me why the zebra crossing on St. Helens Road, leading to the park has been closed for the past four weeks?

Are you waiting for an accident to happen? When will it reopen?

Editor's note: The crossing continues to be closed for impending sewer works for the Wesley Guild house building.

A Wigan Council spokesman said: "It originbally closed because its surface had become dangerous to pedestrians and badly need renewal.

"We have since discovered that a sewer is to be installed eventually in that part of the road. Since temporary traffic lights will have to be installed while this is done, advice from the polivce was to keep the zebra crossing closed for the time being.

"It will re-instated as soon as possible."
