PRIME Minister John Major flew to Germany in a last-ditch attempt to save thousands of Lancashire defence jobs. He urged Chancellor Kohl not to withdraw from the £22 billion four-nation European Fighter Aircraft project, on which thousands of local jobs depended.
Mr Major underlined Britain's commitment to the projects and its determination to proceed into full-scale production even if Germany pulled out.
