A TERRIFIC trio of tenors will hit the high notes at the climax of this year's St Helens Show, on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, July 25 to 27.

Their 'Pavarotti in the Park'-style concert, followed by a vivid fireworks display, will bring down the curtain on an exciting weekend of spectacular entertainment and family fun.

The Three British Tenors - Richard Courtice, Alan Johnson and Jeffrey Cresswell - base their act on the international trio of Pavarotti, Domingo and Carreras. The trio will round-off the nationally-renowned show which, given fine weather, is expected to attract up to 500,000 people.

Visitors can hear a wide variety of music on all three days, with international interest provided by the Bavarian sound of Willie Schneider's Oompah Band and Sumaj Rumi's Bolivian Folk Band playing music of the Andes. From nearer home come Haydock Youth Brass Band, the National Westminster Jazz Band and the North West Infantry (TA) King's Band.

Sky divers and aerobatic displays will provide aerial thrills, while on the ground, daredevil motor-cyclists will ride through fire and other obstacles. Army and Royal Navy exhibition and display teams will also take part.

For the first time, the show's craft fayre is extended to include antique collectors and another new feature is an exemption dog show, for pedigree and non-pedigree breeds, in aid of the RSPCA.

Further attractions are a veteran and vintage car rally, go-karts and junior motor bikes, equestrian events, morris dancing and a demonstration of sheepdog skills which includes the control of ducks!

Traditional crowd-pulling features include trade stands; flower, vegetable and craft exhibitions; Jay Miller's Circus and the usual funfair. Three radio stations, Radio City, Rock FM and Wish FM, will stage road shows.

Employees of local companies have entered teams for 'It's a Knockout' high jinks while old Star favourites the Mother and Baby contest and 'Young Stars of Tommorow' will feature alongside our St Helens Starbud Show Princess contest for girls aged three to eight, And this year boys of the same age will compete to be the first St Helens Starlad, judged on appearance, personality and character. Valuable prizes are on offer for the winners and runners-up.

Show organiser Jenny Lloyd says: "The St Helens Show is a premier event where local companies can market and sell their products. Trade, exhibition and craft spaces are still available and there is room to advertise in the show programme for those who act quickly."
