A CARNFORTH school aims to show youngsters and adults the way to good health during a week of special activities. Next week, pupils at Our Lady of Lourdes RC School will ask staff, children, parents and the local community to think more positively about their health and life styles. The school is taking part in a pilot scheme to help encourage schools to become health-promoting. It is part of the Morecambe Bay Partners in Health Scheme. During the 'health week', the school's pupils will have talks from health professionals about the dangers of smoking and alcohol as well as sun awareness, physical activity and parentcraft. The school has also arranged for pupils to be treated to a 'peace dancing' session by yoga instructor Penny Xerri. The week will culminate with a health fair on June 12, offering staff and parents the opportunity to have their blood pressure measured, to take part in fitness tests and to talk to health professionals about diets, smoking and drugs.

Morecambe Bay's Director of Public Health, Dr Nick Gent, said today: "Partners in Health involves our health promotion teams and a wide range of organisations who employ hundreds of people. There is a potential here for improving the health of many, many people within Morecambe Bay.

"The involvement of Our Lady of Lourdes School is particularly encouraging as the school has been enthusiastic about health for some time. Last year they won £500 as runners-up in the primary school section of a regional NHS competition, and last summer they took part in a campaign to persuade children to avoid the sun and play in the shade. That was to highlight the risks of skin cancer in later life.'
