REGARDING the initiative of the ambulance service garage being utilised by the public to bolster funds (LET, May 17), I recall a similar interesting situation arising between the two wars.
The flat roof of Blackburn Fire Station was utilised and a picturesque garden flourished in which was a large greenhouse, producing an abundance of fruits, vegetables and flowers.
The Chief Inspector found it a useful and healthy medium for recreation when off duty. But I can find no mention of how the surplus produce was dispersed.
