ADRIAN Heath is closing his transfer net on a new goalkeeper.

The Clarets boss wants an experienced keeper in place for the start of pre-season training next month.

The departure of reserve Wayne Russell has left Heath with no cover for first choice Marlon Beresford.

And I can reveal tonight that the Turf Moor chief has had extensive talks with two transfer targets, one a former international.

"It is a vitally important area of the team and I want to bring in an experienced goalkeeper who is going to challenge Marlon hard for his place," said Heath.

"Ideally, I would like to bring in two goalkeepers.

"Obviously, Marlon is our first choice goalkeeper but I don't think he has had enough fierce competition for his place.

"Marlon knows, like the rest of the side, that if he is not doing his stuff then he would be in danger of losing his place. "The player I have in mind would give Marlon a real run for his money and also provide us with extra cover if Marlon was injured."

Heath says he has had no further enquiries for Beresford, who was subject of keen interest from First Division Birmingham City in March.

The Clarets boss added: "I believe it is vitally important to have two quality goalkeepers at the club."

If Heath is successful in a bid to sign his target, it would mean a third Turf Moor signing in a week following the capture of Marco Gentile from Holland and midfielder Mark Patterson for £200,000 from Sheffield United.

West Brom will break their transfer record tomorrow by completing the signing of Preston North End winger Kevin Kilbane for £1.25 million.

The Republic of Ireland Under-21 star will sign at the Hawthorns when he returns from his summer holiday.
