YOUNGSTERS at a Burnley School are learning about health during a fun-packed week.

Health week at Ightenhill Primary has been funded by East Lancashire Business Partnership and supported by local businesses. All 450 pupils are taking part.

The programme includes tips on healthy food from Gail McDonald of Sainsburys, a visit from police talking about personal safety, a talk by the dental department, exercises with Dianne Kershaw from the Thompson Centre and a trip to Asda.

Today the children were visiting Burnley Football Club, the Thompson Centre, Oddies Bakery, Burnley General Hospital and Asda.

Another class will tomorrow visit Oddies, the police will explain road safety issues, in the afternoon Adrian Bowden will give two performances of a travelling science show, more children will visit Asda and parents and friends will be invited to a Body Shop party in the evening.

Sainsburys will be back on Thursday while other classes will picnic on Pendle Hill or visit science museum Eureka in Halifax. Nurse Marilyn Grice will talk about growing and Dianne will be holding exercise classes.

On Friday, Marilyn will give another talk on growing and children will visit Turf Moor and the Thompson Centre.

Various activities will be held at playtime, including a junior long jump competition, pogo stick jumping, skittles, yo-yos and singing and circular games.

Children can bring roller blades into school tomorrow for playtime and on Thursday there will be a bouncy castle.

Margaret Cannon, personal and social education teacher who organised the week, said: "We want our children to think about personal hygiene, healthy diet, safety at home and at play, safety in the sun and exercise."
