THE Premier League Champions, Manchester United, will take on Lancaster City at the Giant Axe in a pre-season friendly on July 26. The local club is said to be 'delighted' at the prospect of taking on the Mighty Reds on home turf and a meeting is being held to discuss the all ticket match. The Giant Axe has a 2,500 capacity crowd and demand for tickets is expected to be high.

The prize fixture came about following a Lancaster City sportsman's dinner where United manager, Alex Ferguson, was guest speaker. "We're very excited and look forward to welcoming the Reds to the Giant Axe. They are the country's leading side and Alex has promised to put out a team with some of the top players," said club spokesman, Mick Hoyle.

Other friendlies at the Giant Axe include newly-promoted Bolton Wanderers on August 1, Dundee United on July 19, Carlisle United on August 6 and Blackpool on August 19. The season proper kicks off on August 23.
