PRESTON North End's football museum was flying the flag when it welcomed back a piece of war-time history.
The ensign of warship HMS PNE was presented to club president Tom Finney by Bolton's Royal Naval Patrol Service Association. The ship was one of 20 vessels named after football clubs in the 1930s.
HMS PNE was armed with machine guns and served in World War Two, hunting submarines and defending convoys from air attack. She was awarded the North Sea 1939-45 battle honours before running aground on the shores of Iceland in 1950.
The ensign and photograph of the boat will be displayed in the museum when it opens in two years time.
Football museum researcher Robert Pratten said: "Naming ships after clubs shows how important the sport was in society at that time and how popular PNE were."
