THOUSANDS of high-spirited families braved the wet and windy weather to pack the streets for the 1997 Leyland Festival.
Despite rain, festival fans of all ages were treated to a colourful procession of floats followed by a whole day of wacky and wonderful events in Worden Park's main arena.
A carnival band, clowns, country dancing and a lawnmower grand prix were just a few of the attractions on Saturday (June 7).
And parachutists, fireworks, and an exploding coffin act made sure the festival really went with a bang.
Festival President Derek Grimshaw said: "We had a brilliant day. Everybody took the weather in good heart.
"The children kept on dancing and the acts kept on going. They were wonderful."
The festival committee will meet up soon to discuss the extravaganza before wasting no time starting to plan next year's event. Mr Grimshaw said: "There's no rest for the wicked."
