GOLBORNE'S Andy Mullaney was within three balls of leading the Vimto Association to a shock win at the weekend.

They all but toppled one of the Lancashire Inter-League competition favourites, the Northern League eventually winning by seven wickets.

The Association looked as if they had thrown away the chance of a good score with a slow start that saw them struggle to 45-2 in 20 overs.

But skipper Mullaney quickly changed that with a gutsy 58 with good support from John Hopkins 42, Richard Sutcliffe 30 and Brett Collins 27.

That gave the Association a healthy scoreline of 195-8.

And when the Northern League became similarly becalmed at 44-3 in the early part of their innings, the Association looked in control.

Andy Fox bowled tightly with only seven runs coming from his first six overs, Steve Walsh (1-29) and Richard Sutcliffe (1-25) chipped in with mean bowling spells to keep them subdued before a 155 partnership took NL to victory.
