TORRISHOLME skipper Mark Drinkall elected to bat on what turned out to be an excellent cricket wicket. Openers Phil Hobson and in particular Gareth Westworth attacked from the outset and raised fifty in only the twelfth over.
With all the Caton attack except Brian Knowles, celebrating his 50th birthday, proving expensive, Hobson and Westworth continued to plunder quick runs until Hobson was well caught by Mark Langhorn for 61.
Osmotherley joined Westworth and threw the bat make 23 before becoming Iqbal's second wicket Aiden Hailes made a quick 10, then he fell closely followed by the tiring Westworth for a magnificent 88, Mark Cottam (28) and Paul Jackson (13) piled on the agony in the closing overs as Torrisholme ran up a mammoth 235 for 4.
Caton made a solid start to their reply but the home catching let them down as Steve Baines was dropped three times. Osmotherley bowled well and was finally rewarded with the wicket of Nigel Baines, the first of two excellent catches by Shaun Martin. Graham Lee finally dismissed Steve Baines, then Richard Baines and Dave Mortimer. With Hitchin and Dainty now playing for a draw, a heavy shower drove the teams off the field for ten minutes with both teams ready to complete the remaining 7 overs the umpires took the surprising decision to declare the wicket unfit and thus deprive Torrisholme of a merited winning draw.
Torrisholme 235 for 4 (3 pts) Caton 121 for 4 (3pts) Rain stopped play.
