A 33-YEAR-OLD man threatened to jump from the kitchen window of his eighth-floor flat and attempted to slit his wrists with a large bread knife.
Emergency services tried for more than two hours to coax the man back to safety at Griffin Court, Mill Hill, Blackburn.
Inspector Bob Webster headed the rescue operation but was forced to call a small team of police and firefighters down from a turntable ladder when the man threatened to jump if they came any closer.
Six police officers then accompanied the inspector when he decided to go into the flats to continue negotiations.
The man, who suffered slight cuts to his wrists during the incident, was eventually led to safety and arrested for breach of the peace and his own safety.
